The concept for The Portmanteau Bag ™ emerged during the winter of 2021, driven by a perceived need to complement my wardrobe with a unique accessory. Extensive research and dedication led to the creation of a practical and timeless product.
To ensure durability, I carefully sourced 16 oz cotton canvas and, with the invaluable assistance of my grandmother and her sewing machine, we crafted my first tote bag. What truly surprised me was the overwhelming enthusiasm that came from my friends, who not only admired the bag but also desired their own. Responding to their requests, I found myself back at the sewing machine. Initially, I crafted the bags on my own with a vintage, 45+ year-old machine, while the next tote bags, due to time constraints, were continued to be skillfully handmade by my grandmother Babcia Ewa.
Over the course of more than 2 years now, The Portmanteau Bag ™ garnered interest among my friends, leading to 65 people worldwide becoming proud owners of this unique accessory. Notably, the list includes individuals like Bafic Rodrigo Caula and Simon Brown. My primary focus is and has always been on fostering connections with like-minded people.
In the spirit of operating within the community, on 27th June I co-organized an event at Flow Cafe Gdynia. It was the first The Portmanteau Bag ™ pop-up, where I had the chance to exhibit the totes, that I previously sold to my friends and of course to meet new friends. During the event there was an opportunity to buy The Portmanteau Bag ™ – together with my grandmother, we sew a few totes in advance. The event was the initiation of a whole series of events that will take place at Flow Cafe Gdynia.
The name MW STUDIOS holds a special place in my creative journey and has been with me for over 4 years. Together with my grandmother, we create these unique pieces under the umbrella of MW STUDIOS LANDSCAPE COMPANY. Consequently, the MW STUDIOS name is embroidered inside every bag. Initially, it served as a profile name on Instagram, where I visually represented my ‘aesthetics.’ This experience taught me the significance of seizing opportunities, as my profile garnered attention from influential figures, such as Virgil Abloh. Although Virgil followed my account, I hesitated to initiate a conversation or even send him a simple ‘thank you’ message. His passing reinforced my commitment to never miss a chance to connect with others. It also inspired me to use the MW STUDIOS name for my tote bag project.
As only few may know,
The Portmanteau Bag ™
and MW STUDIOS LANDSCAPE COMPANY
would have never been created
if it weren't for Virgil.
We never met,
nonetheless I am grateful
that I "encountered" you in my life
and that you relentlessly
did what you felt was right.
